Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most important factors in college admissions?

Grades, test scores, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation are typically the key factors. However, when I am on the road talking to admissions folks, they also tell me this: they want to really get to know the student, who they are, beyond the test and grade data. That’s where Maverick comes in handy- helping the student reveal that in their authentic voice.

There are also a few things that you might not even have thought about, like how your child’s high school’s profile might be even more important than their GPA- or how even clicking on an email and getting a brochure might put your student on a school’s radar, racking up that “demonstrated interest.” This field is so rapidly changing- let me be your wingman to help you keep up.

How important are standardized test scores?

While important, they are just one piece of the puzzle. Many schools are becoming test-optional or test-blind, prioritizing other aspects of the application.  Should the student submit their scores? Its a tough question, but we can help you weigh the pros and cons. There are plenty of schools, great schools, that are looking much more wholistically at the students these days- some you may never have heard of.

When should we start the college application process?

At Maverick we prefer the long leisurely walk over the stressed out sprint. We suggest starting in the 9th or 10th grade, but starting september of Junior year is absolutely fine.

How many colleges should my child apply to?

We painstakingly create a list of 20 exciting campuses  that will be a great fit. Then your child narrows that down to 10. The schools  will range from Dream, to Probable, to Likely- but every single one will be a good fit- we don’t believe in applying to a “safety” just because.

What is the best way to prepare for college interviews?

Not many schools do in person interviews, and some that do are low stakes,  just to get to know you. These days videos are becoming more popular as well. But MCQ will certainly help with mock interviews and prep, and arranging for interviews if required.

How can we afford college?

We explore all financial aid options like scholarships, grants, merit aid, and student loans.  It’s a huge investment, so like buying a house, it’s a wholistic process. What’s the neighborhood like? What’s the value and ROI here?  At Maverick, we don’t wait until the acceptance letters come in to talk about money. We start right off the bat with open and frank dialogue with the whole family.

How can we help our child choose the right college?

This is what Maverick is all about. You are hiring us to take away the stress and uncertainty. Parents can be as involved as they want. Some prefer to stay out of it almost totally, but others enjoy it when the student and Maverick assign them short and attainable tasks. The choices are tough, but at the end of the Maverick journey, we hope that the student has a lot of options- and all good ones!
